USA hosts its first Twenty20 internationals, 1st T20I: New Zealand v Sri Lanka at Lauderhill Live Streaming Online

New Zealand will play three Twenty20s against Sri Lanka in the USA next month in an effort to spread the game into a new market. The series will be the first time full ICC members have played in the country and New Zealand are hoping to make annual visits following a partnership between New Zealand Cricket and USA Cricket.
The matches will occur in Lauderhill, Florida, which is about 30 miles from Miami, from May 20-23. There is an estimated 15 million cricket fans in the USA and Don Lockerbie, the USA Cricket chief executive, said the best teams in the world needed to play in the country for the game to grow.
"We want to demonstrate to the American public just how exciting the T20 format is," he said. "Cricket is already popular here but has lacked major media coverage. This inaugural series is the first step to reverse this situation."
Justin Vaughan, New Zealand Cricket's chief executive, said New Zealand wanted to develop the sport in the USA. "We are looking at ways of helping USA Cricket grow the game both professionally and at the grassroots," he said. "This T20 series is the first of many initiatives between our two cricket boards and we envisage the Black Caps playing in the USA on an annual basis."
Sri Lanka, who have promised to send their best team, and New Zealand will head to the USA following the World Twenty20, which starts next week in the Caribbean. The games are scheduled for May 20, 22 and 23 at the Central Broward County Regional Park Cricket Stadium. It has a capacity of 20,000 and is the only ICC-approved cricket stadium in North America.
"The historic event will provide great exposure for cricket with some of the world's top players on show here," Gladstone Dainty, USA Cricket's president, said. "USA Cricket has worked hard to bring this event about."

Regardless of whether England emerge triumphant against Australia, the form team of the tournament, they have turned a corner in terms of public perception. In many ways, the tale of their shortcomings in ICC global events is less a matter of their failure to take home any trophies, but their failure to give themselves a chance to compete. On two occasions in the modern era of one-day cricket, they've found a formula that came close to ending the drought - namely, at the 1992 World Cup, when their greatest player, the ageing Ian Botham, was arguably their weakest link, and in the 2004 Champions Trophy, when Michael Vaughan's men were already building towards the following summer's Ashes.

In almost every other tournament of note they have been little short of a rabble, and that includes their previous forays in the World Twenty20, in South Africa in 2007, when they opened the batting with the bits-and-pieces Darren Maddy, and in 2009, when the Netherlands (including a certain Dirk Nannes) stunned them in the tournament curtain-raiser. At the third time of asking, however, England have hit upon a formula that deserves to succeed precisely because it doesn't see success as a birthright. Every player from 1 to 11 is up for a scrap, and against an Australian side that doesn't know when it's beaten, a scrap is precisely what they can expect.

It has taken the Australians five years to shed the view that Twenty20 is a format for fun. However, Michael Clarke's team is playing the game in the same serious, clinical and tunnel-visioned manner that has been so successful for them in Tests and ODIs over the past decade. Under Clarke's captaincy the side's worst result in 14 matches is the tie against New Zealand in February, which turned into a Super Over defeat.

Since then they have won six matches in a row, including the breath-taking semi-final triumph over Pakistan, in a record that is more suited to Ricky Ponting's all-conquering outfits in 50-over World Cups. Not only are they well balanced, with frightening bowlers and muscular batsmen, but they now expect to win everything. And the only thing that can motivate them more than capturing a trophy they have never held is to beat England in doing it

Much about the way these two teams have arrived at this juncture suggests that we could have on our hands a repeat of last year's tense, compelling semi-final between South Africa and Pakistan.
Even more than last year, Pakistan's progress this time has been deeply unimpressive. They have only won two games from five and are still not sure of their best XI. Australia, like South Africa last year, have uncomplicatedly and with little fuss pushed aside teams unfortunate enough to get in their way: blast them at the top of each innings. Chaos against order, art taking on science and all that? They're even playing in St Lucia, which like Trent Bridge last year, should work in Pakistan's favour.
In reality nothing stands further from the truth. This is, after all, Australia and Australia is Australia precisely because it is not South Africa: in that alone waits a book on why two cultures so similar are so different. South Africa die on such days, wracked by demons of rigidity. Australia live for such days, the pressure of semi-finals and finals sharpening their focus even more. On these occasions they are at their most Australian.
They also seem to have finally worked out the format, or at least applied their own interpretation to it. Very fast bowlers, good solid ones, appear to be the key in a format which is often credited - mistakenly - to have saved spin. Their openers are the most brutal and their middle order most adept at recovery. Even negatives are really a positive: Michael Clarke has only 48 runs in the tournament at a strike rate of 70, yet it is difficult to argue against Malcolm Conn's assessment of him as this format's Mike Brearley currently.

Just ask Brett Lee, who in last year's World Twenty20 was mauled so badly by Gayle at The Oval that the ball at one stage ended up on the roof of the Bedser Stand. It would take a massive defeat for Australia to miss out; on his best day, Gayle is one man capable of inflicting such a result.

Suresh Raina struggled at first, then he sizzled. He overcame a jittery period of mis-hits and short-pitched bowling, scoring 82 off the last 38 balls he faced, en route to only the third century in Twenty20 internationals. Yuvraj Singh came back to form, Graeme Smith's reluctance to attack with Dale Steyn confounded, and India's 186 was always going to be too much on a difficult pitch and a slow and big outfield.
South Africa's reply, in the face of a four-spinner Indian attack - without using Yuvraj - was even more confounding. Jacques Kallis and Smith struggled to flow, and hesitated to take risks. Their run-rate crossed six an over for the first time in the 11th over, and it was too late by then, despite some late hitting from Kallis.
India had got off to a similar start, albeit against seamers, but unlike South Africa they threw away the caution at a more appropriate time. With two early wickets gone and both Raina and Yuvraj struggling to present the middle of the bat, India were 43 after eight overs. There was no mucking around after that. Although the odd mis-hit remained a feature of the partnership, the sweet shots grew in frequency and India got 143 in the next 12 overs. It worked for them that the mis-hits kept bouncing in front of deep fielders, and the sweet ones cleared them easily.
Raina will cherish this knock all the more because the pitch interested a variety of bowlers. South Africa had managed to assume a strong position with their hit-the-deck bowlers, India were about to do so with the spinners. Harbhajan Singh bowled the first over, Yusuf Pathan was introduced inside the Powerplay, and Loots Bosman was out of his depth on the slow pitch.
With both Kallis and Smith struggling, by the time the first piece of enterprise came, a slog-swept six from Smith in the 11th over, the required run-rate had reached 13. By the time Kallis reached his fifty, off 45 balls, they were needing 15.5 in each of the six overs to come.
Suddenly Kallis exploded, hitting three sixes in the next two overs. It seemed for the second time in 40 overs a batsman was about to put behind him the struggles and play a decisive knock. Yet, there were just too many risks required, and one of them claimed Kallis, leaving 59 to get off 21. The requirement was comfortable enough for India to be able to experiment: Praveen Kumar bowled just one over, for three runs. Pakistan survived a Mohammad Ashraful scare to begin the defence of their world title at St Lucia with a 21-run win over Bangladesh. Kamran Akmal and Salman Butt had laid the foundations with a 142-run stand that should've put the game beyond Bangladesh. But Ashraful, with Shakib Al Hasan for company, took a real pop at an imposing 173-run target, before Mohammad Sami swung a slow-burning game decisively Pakistan's way.

Bangladesh had been poor for vast chunks of the game, first with the ball, and then in starting the chase. But Ashraful's forceful 91-run stand with Shakib brought them close enough to get Pakistan jittery with five overs to go. Sami, on his T20I debut, ensured it wasn't to be with a fine two-wicket over to effectively end the game. Mohammad Aamer had throttled Bangladesh's start and Ashraful arrived with trouble brewing. Having typically tried all manner of unnecessary improvisation initially, Ashraful settled down to playing normal strokes. It's asked often why he doesn't play those more, and let this be another time. He quickly deposited Abdul Razzaq for a wonderful six over midwicket, but really cranked up the heat when he took on Pakistan's captain next.

The first ball of Shahid Afridi's spell, the 11th over, was driven exquisitely over extra cover but it was in his next over that he really shook Pakistan up. Again he lofted Afridi, but with such grace and timing that the ball fairly sailed over long-off. A couple of balls later, he went squarer and soon after brought up his fifty. Shakib meanwhile was showing the world once again why he is such a special young man. He never panicked, which can't often be said of Ashraful, and went about choosing his spots almost at will. Saeed Ajmal was heaved for one and Mohammad Hafeez was slog-swept for two maximums and suddenly Bangladesh had recovered from 36 for 2 to 115 for two after 14.
As so often, however, it wasn't to be and the surprise was that it was Shakib who perished first. Afridi took a gamble in bringing back an uncertain Sami, but it paid off as Shakib fell and Mahmudullah followed a few balls later. Ashraful still went on, dishing out some serious stick to Afridi, before falling, inevitably, to an improvised paddle, signaling a brave end.
Akmal gave him predictable company, almost immediately trying to set the agenda. A bold statement was made against left-arm spin - Bangladesh's most potent weapon - straight away, as he twice swept away Abdur Razzak in the second over.

He was the one who took risks, almost paying for it when a miscued pull was fluffed by Ashraful. They were to pay for it as Akmal did what he does best. Out came the cuts, the scything cover drives, the pulls and the occasional mind-boggling slap over extra cover. All the while singles and doubles flowed on the large ground, giving Akmal a comfortable 73.

Bangladesh were unable to string together an over of good balls. It wasn't until the 16th over, when they claimed Akmal finally, that they bowled an over without conceding at least one boundary. They recovered, not allowing any more in the final overs but the damage had been done.

Just past the half-way stage, things are looking good for Delhi Daredevils and Royal Challengers Bangalore. They are both tied on wins and points after playing the same number of matches, and Bangalore lead by the slenderest of margins on net run-rate.

Delhi have pulled up their socks after a short sag and their bowling is back on track too, despite the continued absence of Ashish Nehra. They have three home games remaining and should look to use that advantage, and the buoyant Kotla crowd, to add to their five wins. They are a safe bet for the semi-finals, especially now that Daniel Vettori has arrived. AB de Villiers and Tillakaratne Dilshan are still warming the bench but these are two players who will prove very valuable when the action heats up in the latter stages.

Bangalore, who also have three home games to go, are also certain for the semis. Their batting is solid, they have one of the better bowling attacks, and they have all their bases covered in 2010. With Ross Taylor also available, Bangalore just got stronger.

Make-up wise, both sides are similar. They both have a strong opening combination and middle order, legspinners in form, and potent new-ball pairs. Where Delhi hold the advantage is that both their openers are capable of winning matches on their own and that they now have the option to include international Twenty20s best slow bowler, Vettori. Sehwag hasn't fired for a while now and he's openly set his sights on regaining his form with the bat. Potentially bad news for Bangalore

Kolkata, on the other hand, are very much in contention and shutting out Punjab from this IPL on Sunday will propel them into the top four with five league games to play. They are bolstered by the return of Brendon McCullum, who joined the squad on Thursday and is likely to feature in the XI. Kolkata's captain Sourav Ganguly inspired them to a vital victory against Deccan Chargers, which snapped their losing streak, and was backed up by an excellent bowling performance which succeeded in reining in Andrew Symonds during the chase.
The track at the Eden Gardens has played slow, and Kolkata have bowled well on it, with their fast bowlers often cutting down on pace to keep the opposition in check. They will play four of their remaining six games at home, and are emerging strong contenders in that increasingly competitive battle for the semis.

Hosts Super Kings too have their work cut out. Having lost the previous encounter at Bangalore, Wednesday's game is just the right time to return the favour to Kumble's men and re-join the race to make it to the last four. In the previous game, Chennai missed Dhoni who was out with an injury. But now fit and playing at home, Dhoni vs Kumble promises to be a battle of wits worth its wait.
Chennai have been sluggish this season and are struggling to make it to the last four. They have lost five of their seven games so far and are placed just one better than bottom-ranked Kings XI Punjab. Another loss would mean their hopes of making it to the title round will be extinguished much sooner than expected.
On the other hand, Bangalore have been in robust form. They have won four of their six games so far and their batting and bowling has looked steady. The only thing common to both teams is that they have both lost their previous encounters and therefore, would like to make immediate amends.
A week's break in a Twenty20 tournament can really disturb the rhythm of even a well-settled team and Bangalore must regroup their energies to ensure that they do not spiral downwards after having done all the hard work in the first fortnight.
And it is this break that Chennai must capitalise on. While the batsmen have done well in bits and pieces, they have not been able to string strong partnerships. And that has been their greatest undoing. Chennai will have to hold fort and win a couple of games if they are to give themselves a fighting chance once Doug Bollinger and Michael Hussey join the team on April 3. Otherwise, their inclusion will be a case of too little and too late.
The bowling too has blown hot and blown cold. Muttiah Muralitharan has taken the fight almost single-handedly, while L Balaji, Manpreety Gony, Albie Morkel will have to bowl a tighter line.
Meanwhile, Bangalore are boosted by the run-scoring machine Jacques Kallis, who has been ably supported by Manish Pandey and Robin Uthappa. Mark Boucher, Rahul Dravid and Eoin Morgan too have been in fine nick and lend solidity to the order.
Their bowling has been in top form with Kumble, Dale Steyn, Kallis, Praveen Kumar and R Vinay Kumar, they do boast of among the best bowling lineup in the tournament, rivaled only by Mumbai.
Wednesday's game at the M A Chidambaram Stadium should be a cracker of a contest, with both teams determined not to give an inch. Chennai, however, will hope that playing at home will give them the edge needed to put their campaign back on track.

Neither did the Kolkata Knight Riders attack elicit respect from Warner, nor did the situation result in apprehension: he just cleared the front leg and hit his way to 107 off 69. The support required amid early wickets came from half-centurion Paul Collingwood, whose innings came straight out of the Paul Collingwood school of batting - practically without a back lift. It's been so far, so good for England in Bangladesh, albeit with the occasional fright along the way in the one-day series and a troublesome list of injuries to their quick bowlers. Even though their strike power has been reduced they should still have too much class for the home side over this short series, but it's unlikely that success will come in the form of three-day thrashings.
The problem for Bangladesh in Test cricket has been sustaining a level of performance throughout the duration of a game. They can bowl well for a session or two, a batsman can hit a flowing fifty (or even a hundred) and they can have the opposition sweating, but the killer blow almost never arrives.
There were prime examples in the recent series against India when Shahadat Hossain's pace rocked India in the first Test before the hosts were eventually overpowered. In the second Tamim Iqbal hit a sparkling 151 but by then Bangladesh were so far adrift in the match it couldn't save them.
However, as Jamie Siddons is often at pains to point out, he doesn't count success in the wins/losses column, but more in the development he can witness in the team. In the likes of Tamim, Mushfiqur Rahim, Shakib Al Hasan and the in-form Mahmudullah there is the core of a useful team which certainly has the ability to cause England some uncomfortable moments. But life in Bangladesh cricket is never simple and Raqibul Hasan's walkout two days before the match was far from ideal preparation.
As in the one-day series, England are in the tricky position of not really being able to gain too much. If they lose it will be classed as a major embarrassment (and even a drawn Test would be a disappointment) while victory will be followed with the "it's only Bangladesh" statements.

The PCB has struck against its players with a venom unseen in recent memory, carrying out the deepest cull of a senior cricket team in many years and banning and fining seven of its top players after the side's disastrous, winless tour of Australia. It has banned Younis Khan and Mohammad Yousuf, from playing for Pakistan in any format for an indefinite period, while handing out one-year bans to Shoaib Malik and Rana Naved-ul-Hasan. Shahid Afridi and the Akmal brothers were fined Rs2-3 million [$24,000-35,000] for various misdemeanours and put on six-month probations.
Action had been expected once details of the inquiry committee's report recommendations were leaked in the press on Monday and Ijaz Butt, the PCB chairman, had followed it up by saying "more than significant action" would be taken against players. While the punishments for Malik, Rana, Afridi and the Akmal brothers were expected, the action against Yousuf and Younis has caught most people off-guard.
"Mohammad Yousuf and Younis Khan, keeping in view their infighting which resulted in bringing down the whole team, their attitude has a trickledown effect which is a bad influence for the whole team should not be part of national team in any format," the board said in its statement issued on Wednesday.
The PCB has stopped short of calling the punishment a life ban. "They will not be part of any Pakistan team in any format from here on," Taffazul Rizvi, the board's legal advisor told Cricinfo. "A life ban means they cannot play domestic cricket or any other similar cricket, but we are not stopping them from that. They can play domestic cricket or county cricket here and abroad."
As a whole, the action is almost unparalleled in even Pakistan's troubled history. The 2000 Justice Qayyum report had similar repercussions but that was about the graver concerns of corruption. This cull has been carried out, ostensibly, in a bid to curb indiscipline and player power.

The IPL's unveiling of its two new franchises on Sunday ended in an anti-climax with the league pushing back the entire process by two weeks, in the process scrapping the existing tender procedure after bidders objected to stiff financial clauses. The new tenders, which will be floated on March 9 and opened on March 21, will drop a clause requiring the bidder to have a net worth of $1 billion.
The new process will also amend two existing clauses: One will be a reduction of the advance deposit from $100 million to a $10 million "performance guarantee", to be submitted 24 hours in advance of the bid being opened. Another original clause gave the IPL's governing council the discretion to seek from the winning bidder 100% of the amount with a minimum time-frame; under the new process, the winning bids will be expected to pay 10% of their bid within 48 hours.
The minimum bid amount, however, remains the same at $225 million; the existing tenders were not opened at the IPL governing council meeting in Mumbai and were returned to the bidders.

The pair got together when Zimbabwe's spinners had, yet again, put in an inspired effort to cripple West Indies in their chase of 207. But Gayle restrained himself amid the quick wickets that followed a fiery start, and opened up in timely fashion with Deonarine once Zimbabwe appeared to step off the pedal, to set the stage for a hard-fought victory. The batting backed up a disciplined effort from West Indies' bowlers, led by Nikita Miller's career-best haul.

A still-niggling factor for Gayle will be the performance of the middle order, which he had singled out for criticism in the aftermath of the two-run upset on Thursday. Bangladesh's captain, Shakib Al Hasan, believes his team is gelling well in the build-up to the 2011 World Cup in exactly 12 months' time, and regards the final ODI against England in Chittagong as an opportunity to lay down a significant marker at a venue where the two teams are set to meet again in the group stages of the tournament.
On March 11 next year, England will return to Chittagong for their fifth match of the World Cup, and the showdown could potentially prove crucial to their prospects of reaching the quarter-final knock-out stages, given that India and South Africa are among their early opponents. And, having been pushed to the brink in the decisive second ODI in Mirpur on Tuesday, England can expect another trial by spin on Friday, with Bangladesh set to name an unchanged side on a ground that has offered appreciable turn in the past.
"Hopefully by the World Cup we will be a very good team," Shakib told Cricinfo. "We understand our game very well now, and we know what kind of shots we can play and what type of game we have to play. Our mindset is good because there's no fear, every time a guy goes out he is thinking he has to step up for the team. It's not about one person standing up, it's about a team effort."
Although the series has now gone, Bangladesh's quest for a maiden victory over England continues, despite Shakib's suggestion on Tuesday that he is more interested in closing the gap on the "bigger" teams in the 50-over game. "We believe we can beat any side if we play to our ability," he said. "We'll definitely try to win the game, but we'll have to keep our processes right. We just need to perform well and keep doing our jobs."
The speed with which Bangladesh learned from their errors in the first ODI, in which Tamim Iqbal scored a brilliant century but found himself completely unsupported, has impressed an England team that has not had a close look at their opponents since a one-sided series back in 2005. With Imrul Kayes and Mushfiqur Rahim knuckling down to produce a pair of crease-occupying fifties, the team was able to bat through its 50 overs, and use the final Powerplay to post a competitive total of 260.
"For the last 15-16 months, we've been scoring consistently well," said Shakib. "Imrul and Mushy are playing superbly, and I need to bat well too, but we have some good hitters at the end of the team too. Hopefully we'll put our big total on the board again, and continue our good performance with the bat."
Unfortunately for Bangladesh, they still made a clutch of critical errors in the second match, most notably in the field, where three catches went down - two of which, off Paul Collingwood and Alastair Cook, proved particularly costly. In addition, England's matchwinner, Eoin Morgan, survived a brace of lbw appeals from Mahmudullah that might on another day have been upheld. The net result was another case of so near, yet so far.

Sachin Tendulkar scored the first double century in one-day international history as India claimed a series-clinching, 153-win against South Africa in Gwalior.
Tendulkar batted throughout India's innings of 401-3 to finish 200 not out, surpassing the previous individual record score in the 50-over format of 194 jointly held by Pakistan's Saeed Anwar and Zimbabwean Charles Coventry.
Despite AB de Villiers' 114 not out, South Africa were dismissed in reply for 248 in 42.5 overs. The tourists now trail 2-0 in the three-match series.
Tendulkar achieved the new landmark from the third ball of the 46th over, clipping his 140th delivery faced for a couple into the leg-side from the bowling of Wayne Parnell.
And he went on to reach 200 in the final over of the innings, bowled by Charl Langeveldt (0-70), with a scrambled single to point.
The 36-year-old, whose previous one-day best was the unbeaten 186 he made against New Zealand in Hyderabad in 1999, hit 25 fours and three sixes during his 147-ball innings.
And, aided by a late cameo from skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, India's final total was the ninth highest ever in one-day internationals.
Dhoni slammed a brutal 68 from 35 balls during a 101-run stand for the fourth wicket with Tendulkar in the closing overs.
Dinesh Karthik (79) and Yusuf Pathan (36) had earlier provided good support during stands worth 194 and 81 for the second and third wickets respectively.
The only Indian to miss out on the run feast was Tendulkar's opening partner Virender Sehwag, who was caught at third-man off Parnell (2-195) for just nine after Dhoni had won the toss and opted to bat first on a placid surface

Lalit Modi has insisted that the IPL will not be moved out of India, despite security concerns raised in an independent report commissioned by the players' unions in England, Australia and South Africa that led to talk of shifting the event to another country.

"We are going to have the tournament in India. I can't see any reason why we should move it at this point in time. The media is reacting to every fringe group saying security is a problem," Modi told BBC Sport in reaction to the concerns.

The Australian reported the security discussions caused a split between high profile freelance players and Ricky Ponting when the situation was outlined at an Australian Cricketers' Association meeting in Sydney on Tuesday. The paper said Shane Warne, Matthew Hayden and Adam Gilchrist, who have supported each IPL tournament, clashed with Ricky Ponting over the way forward.

Cricket Australia-contracted players want to follow the ACA's advice while Warne and Hayden, a Cricket Australia board member, have said they want to go. If players pull out of the tournament they could be banned from future IPL editions, a decision which would cost some of them millions of dollars.

The report, written by the England team's security advisor Reg Dickason, said there was a credible threat to the tournament from terrorist groups, raising questions over player safety apart from talk of a boycott by international cricketers. The Australian Cricketers' Association has decided to formulate a list of security demands for IPL organisers, following a meeting attended by most Australian players slated to play in the tournament.

"The process from here is for all players associated to meet with their player groups and for all of us to feed back the concerns raised from these meetings to the IPL," Paul Marsh, the ACA's chief executive said. "This will be coordinated through our peak body the Federation of International Cricketers' Associations. From here we will await a response from the IPL."

Heath Mills, the New Zealand Players' Association chief, also outlined security concerns. "It's one thing to have a security management plan, it's a much different thing to see it delivered and delivered well. It's quite complex when you consider the IPL is played across 12 cities, 12 police jurisdictions throughout India. There are some real concerns around that aspect," Mills said.

Modi, however, underplayed their concerns. "Nobody in the world can safeguard the safety of the players in any tournament. All we have to do is ensure we are putting on the best security," Modi said. "Safety is paramount to us and we are working with the national and state governments to ensure we have good security in place.

"At the end of the day we have to ensure the safety plans we put in place and the way we conduct them are absolutely top-notch."

Modi also said that he was not overly concerned by the possibility of overseas players withdrawing from the event. "The heavens aren't going to fall if that happens. This is an Indian tournament; we have the key Indian players and only a few international players."

"We have no worries at all. You have to understand that the market for us is India. "The tournament is a huge success - we have a huge credibility, we have the top 200 players in the world. It's not only dependent on foreign players, although they are part of it, Modi said.

It went down to the last ball but when Jacques Kallis fell in the 43rd over, with South Africa requiring an improbable 74 from 43 balls and only two wickets in hand, it looked like game, set and match to India. From there, Dale Steyn and Wayne Parnell threatened to pull of an incredible heist but India held their nerve to clinch a final-ball win in Jaipur.
The quality of cricket was actually below-par from both sides - India's bowling threatened to completely disintegrate under the pressure and barring Kallis, South Africa's batting was quite dismal - but the contest was made memorable by the tailenders Steyn and Parnell. This is how it panned out in the end: Steyn lashed two straight sixes in the 46th over bowled by Suresh Raina, the pair pinched three boundaries in the 48th over bowled by an errant Sreesanth and when both batsmen struck audacious sixes down the ground against Ashish Nehra in the 49th over, South Africa required only 10 from the last over.
Praveen Kumar bowled Steyn with a slower one off the second delivery but the drama wasn't over yet. Charl Langeveldt pulled the penultimate delivery to long leg where Sachin Tendulkar dived full-stretch to prevent the boundary. Many replays later, the third umpire ruled it a legal save and South Africa had to be content with three runs but had the well-set Parnell on strike for the last delivery. More excitement lay ahead as Praveen hurled a wide leaving South Africa needing three to win. Parnell squeezed out the final delivery to third man where Sreesanth fielded the ball cleanly and threw in a slightly wide throw but MS Dhoni had enough time to break the stumps with Parnell just one yard short of levelling the scores.
Until those dramatic end overs where India threatened to choke, they had actually done most things necessary to win the game. No batsman got a big score, but there were enough handy contributions from the top-order to push India to a strong 298. No bowler got more than two wickets but there was enough combined discipline in the attack, till they crumbled under the Steyn & Parnell show, to restrict South Africa.
For their part, South Africa might have come very close in the end but the stand-in captain Jacques Kallis was the only top-order batsman to offer any resistance in the chase where Ravindra Jadeja starred for India with his unspectacular but steady spell of left-arm spin where he used the arm-ball quite liberally to keep the batsmen honest. When Jadeja came on to bowl South Africa were sitting pretty at 60 for 1 from nine overs. When he finished his first spell that read 8-2-23-2, and included the vital wickets of Herschelle Gibbs and AB de Villiers, South Africa had slowed down to 127 for 3 from 24 overs.
He didn't get the ball to turn but repeatedly slipped the one that went straight on with the arm to suffocate the batsmen. The ball also tended to skid on in this surface and at times kept a touch low and the batsmen struggled to put away his armers. He lured Gibbs to slice to long-off and troubled both Kallis and de Villiers with his skidding deliveries. de Villiers tried to wriggle free with an attempted cut shot that proved fatal as he completely failed to connect.
From then on South Africa were always chasing their own tail despite Kallis' effort and though Steyn and Parnell played the one-day innings of their lives, they fell short in the end.
Like South Africa, India too didn't have any centurion today but, unlike the visitors, there were enough contributions to charge them to a strong score. On a day when Virender Sehwag played a couple of typically stunning shots - a slashed six over third man and another flamboyantly carved over covers being the picks - two innings, from men who are yet to secure their spots in the playing eleven, caught the eye. Karthik's entertaining 44 and Raina's attractive 58 stood out for their sparkling shots, and also for their untimely dismissals. Both fell when they were well-set and had the opportunity to take India to an unassailable position.

As was fitting, it was Harbhajan who brought about the final wicket with a slider to the left-hand batsman Morne Morkel, who had put together a 76-minute last-wicket stand with Amla. The final few steps didn't come easy for India: the last three wickets batted out 53.3 overs to set up a beautiful Test-match finish.
For eight hours and 19 minutes in this innings, which took to 23 hours and 22 minutes the total time he's spent at the wicket for the series, Amla saw everything: offbreaks, topspinners, unintended doosras, big legbreaks, googlies, bouncers, full ones, a blow to the elbow, the bowlers' joy, their frustration, and Harbhajan's eruption on taking the last wicket. At every stage - when he reached fifty or his hundred, when he was hurt, when he was concentrating, when he was defending, during those final few overs of counting each delivery down, and when he was walking back after one of the biggest disappointments he has experienced on a cricket field - the calm expression on his face was unchanged.
Amla batted like the Monk who didn't need to sell a Ferrari, and it took a special bowling effort to deny his side the series win. Harbhajan answered India's call with spin bowling aggressive and patient, smart and persistent, and came up with that wicket-taking delivery when it had deserted the other bowlers.
If Amla never looked like getting out, Harbhajan never looked like letting anyone settle. India had 98 overs to get seven wickets but 52.2 of them were a write-off: they were bowled to Amla, and this man was not going to get out. Not today. They did well, though, to create enough pressure in the remaining overs - despite two dropped catches - to finish off the match with 16 minutes remaining in the day's play.
India woke up to a bright and sunny day, but were thwarted in the first session by Amla and Ashwell Prince. For about two hours, Amla kept killing their hopes, Prince kept raising them only to not edge to hand. Finally, just when the draw started to become the favoured result, Harbhajan came back for his second spell of the day, from his favoured High Court End.
In the first spell, he had tried to get Prince lbw in a fashion similar to the one in the first innings, and failed. In his second he went over the stumps and made it difficult for Prince to judge which deliveries to leave. The leg line troubled Prince, and finally he jabbed at one outside off and lobbed it to mid-off.
Amit Mishra once again produced the special delivery out of nowhere, this time a googly to take out AB de Villiers in the penultimate over before the lunch break, the third time he had taken a wicket just before a break in the innings. de Villiers' was the big wicket because he was the one batsman capable of using his feet and hitting spinners off their length. In the second spell, six overs each either side of lunch, Harbhajan looked menacing with almost every delivery. After lunch, Harbhajan went on to suggest JP Duminy might become his new Ponting. Offbreak, offbreak, slider. Duminy caught in front again. Dale Steyn didn't have a clue about deliveries spinning down the leg side, and kept getting beaten. Harbhajan smartly moved round the stumps, and trapped him too.
Thereafter Amla found an able partner in Parnell, who looked much more assured than Steyn, and helped by a dropped catch by Suresh Raina at a wide fourth slip, played out 24.2 overs. Amla manipulated the strike well: out of eight overs that Harbhajan bowled during that stand, Parnell got away by facing only 12 balls from the best bowler around.
A soft shot befitting a No. 9 arrived duly, after which Amla shielded Paul Harris for a while. From facing four balls of each over, he gradually let Harris face three each, and by the time Harris generated enough confidence in Amla, a soft shot befitting a No. 10 came by. Ishant got both the wickets, but 8.3 more overs had been negated.
That started the most exciting period of the match. Morkel batted solidly along with Amla, they both judged the leaves well, they both defended with soft hands, they both frustrated India more with every passing delivery. Towards the end, mind games began. Amla took a single late in a Mishra over to face Harbhajan in the next over, Dhoni removed Harbhajan and tried the part-time stuff from Sachin Tendulkar and Sehwag, and got Harbhajan to bowl at Morkel again.
Nothing gave. Amla seemed to have found a partner who was holding his nerve well. The desperation on Indian faces kept getting more and more apparent with every passing delivery. With 3.2 overs to go, Amla cut Tendulkar towards the boundary, took a single so as to face two more overs as opposed to one. Sehwag hoped it would reach the boundary as he chased, but slyly tried to kick it over when he saw it stop inches before the rope. Just to keep Morkel on strike. That's how much it mattered.
Amla duly played out the next over, Dhoni duly saved Harbhajan for the over after that. Harbhajan had six more balls left, from the High Court End. The first pitched middle, turned away. Afridi's elevation to the captaincy was due to Mohammad Yousuf being ruled out with a stiff knee, but the two other changes to Pakistan's XI were clearer cut. Kamran Akmal's form with the bat as opener hasn't been great and Khalid Latif has been picked at the top of the order, while Akmal's official replacement, Sarfraz Ahmed, will keep wickets and bat in the middle order. India 544 for 8 dec (Tendulkar 143, Dravid 111 retd hurt, Dhoni 89) and 2 for 0 beat Bangladesh 233 (Mahmudullah 96*, Ishant 4-66, Zaheer 3-62) and 312 (Tamim 151, Junaid 55, Zaheer 7 for 87) by ten wickets.
From a position of relative strength to utter disarray in the space of half an hour - that was Bangladesh's story on the final day of the series in Mirpur. From 290 for 3, they lost six wickets for 14, and only a couple of hefty blows from Mushfiqur Rahim ensured that the innings defeat was avoided. But Zaheer Khan, who had spent much of the morning wearing a back-brace before returning to scalp three in an over, needed just three balls after lunch to make a mess of Rubel Hossain's stumps, and when Shakib Al Hasan's second ball went for byes, the match was over.
Pragyan Ojha had taken the wickets of Mohammad Ashraful and Shakib Al Hasan, before ceding the limelight to Zaheer, easily the pick of the bowlers in the series. But there was no hint of the drama to come as Bangladesh made serene progress in the opening hour. Ashraful drove Zaheer through cover, but was largely an amused onlooker as Shahadat Hossain, the nightwatchman, took to the attack with some gusto.
A pull for four off Ishant Sharma bolstered his confidence and though a subsequent top-edged heave over slips betrayed his tail-end roots, there was nothing fortuitous about a lovely straight six off Ojha or a copy-book cover-drive off Zaheer. With Gautam Gambhir then conceding four overthrows, and Ojha clubbed for another four through midwicket, there would have been Indian supporters whose minds strayed to the prospect of a tricky fourth-innings chase.
The sense of unease was compounded when Amit Mishra dropped Shahadat at deep midwicket after he'd given Harbhajan Singh the big heave-ho. There were 51 runs scored before drinks and it was only when Shahadat tried to wallop Harbhajan over long-on again that the wheels came off. This time, Amit Mishra held on to the catch, and the 68-run partnership was over.
Ashraful, who had shown uncharacteristic patience all the while, followed in Shahadat's wake, undone by a beautiful Ojha delivery from round the wicket. Shakib played the most bizarre of innings, striking the first ball he faced for a straight six, and then sweeping one straight to Gambhir at square leg. Resistance breached, MS Dhoni turned to his best bowler.
Brace or no brace, Zaheer was a man on fire. Raqibul Hasan shouldered arms to one that came in with the angle from round the wicket, while Mahmudullah was defeated by late movement and a magnificent catch from Murali Vijay, who took the catch an inch from the ground while diving to his left at second slip. Shafiul Islam's stumps were splayed next ball, and it took some defiance from Mushfiqur to make India bat again. In the event, they didn't even need to play a shot in anger.

Tamim Iqbal unleashed an array of brilliant counterattacking strokes on his way to a splendid 151 as Bangladesh posed an injury-ridden Indian side some searching questions on the third afternoon in Mirpur. Having come to bat 311 runs in arrears, Tamim was severe on pace and spin alike as Bangladesh stormed past 200 with just one wicket down. Junaid Siddique provided a solid 55 at the other end and their record partnership was worth 200 when Zaheer Khan broke through just before stumps. And reverse swing was once again the key factor as Tamim too feathered one behind in the day's penultimate over.
India had declared at their lunch score of 544 for 8, after MS Dhoni's search for a century was ended by a smart stumping from Mushfiqur Rahim, but any hopes of a quick finish were blown away by the ferocity of Tamim's onslaught. He started off by steering Zaheer through the slip cordon for four and the loss of Imrul Kayes - he mistimed one to cover after being struck by a nasty bouncer - did nothing to hamper his progress. Ishant Sharma was slashed over slip and pulled for four, while Zaheer found his slower ball clouted down the ground. Pragyan Ojha was greeted with a saunter down the track and heave for four, and a deft paddle took him to 50 from just 49 balls.
Harbhajan Singh was the most economical of the bowlers on view, but even he wasn't spared, with Tamim swinging a four and a six over midwicket. The six brought up the hundred of the innings, and a lovely on-drive off Ishant followed. With Junaid clipping some neat strokes through midwicket, the partnership was worth 99 by tea. There was no respite for the Indians after the break either, with Tamim hitting Ojha out of the attack with two fours and a six slugged over midwicket.
A pull to fine leg off Zaheer took him to a hundred from just 101 balls, and he celebrated with two imperious straight drives. Harbhajan was then smeared through the covers twice, and sent a fair distance over long-on for six. The only blot came after he had made 138, an ugly heave off Virender Sehwag that Sachin Tendulkar couldn't quite latch on to at midwicket. He injured himself in the attempt and left the field, and India spent the final hour with the spinners bowling mostly wide of off stump in an attempt to entice the reckless stroke. It was Zaheer that finally gave Dhoni something to smile about, with Siddique getting a faint edge as he attempted to drive.

They were listing at 106 for 6 when he came to the crease, but a stroke-filled and unbeaten 96 led a rally to 233 all out, a significant improvement on the 51 for 5 that the scoreboard showed when Ashraful had his brain fade.
The last two wickets added 78, with Shafiul Islam defying India for 39 balls and Rubel Hossain keeping out 25 before Harbhajan Singh sneaked one through his defence to leave Mahmudullah stranded. He had struck two fours in a Harbhajan over to get within touching distance, but after nearly 30 overs of batting with No.10 and Jack, his luck ran out. As he walked off though, several Indian fielders ran up to shake his hand. It had been that kind of innings.
He had marked his guard after Mushfiqur Rahim, centurion in Chittagong, had been trapped on the crease by Ishant Sharma. He eased nerves with a neat glance for four off Zaheer Khan and then continued to go for his shots once Shakib had chased a wide one from Zaheer into the hands of MS Dhoni. Zaheer was then pulled and upper-cut for four and after Shahadat Hossain went, stumped off the bowling of Pragyan Ojha, he swept and reverse-swept Harbhajan to keep the Indians on their toes.

Australia over-ran Pakistan in the opening game thanks to Cameron White's first century at home and there is an opportunity to take a 2-0 lead in the five-match series when the sides meet in Sydney on Sunday. The five-wicket success in Brisbane showed both outfits are batting well, but they will have a different set of conditions to cope with in game two.
Australia have a slight injury concern over Michael Clarke, who flew to Sydney earlier than his team-mates on Saturday. Clarke was hit in the ribs by Mohammad Aamer shortly before being dismissed for 58 and crumpled to the ground. "I think he'll be okay," Ricky Ponting said. "It looked pretty sore. I don't know much more about it but he seemed okay in the rooms."
There was also a worry for Ponting with the size of the crowd in Brisbane, which at 19,758 was about half the capacity, but the captain, a strong defender of the 50-over format, is hoping for much better over the next two fixtures. "Sydney will be pretty much sold out I reckon and Adelaide [on Tuesday], you always get pretty good attendances there, so I think the next couple of games will tell a truer story than this one." However, unless there is a surge in support, the SCG will be half-full as well.

After the verbal jousts that spiced up the contest in Chittagong, the teams arrived in Dhaka having proved their points in different ways. Virender Sehwag had called Bangladesh "ordinary", but for the first half of the match they were more than a match for the Indians. Sehwag himself would have felt vindicated by the fact that India won by 113 runs, though Bangladesh did come close to taking the 20 wickets that he thought them incapable of.
But for a magnificent century from Sachin Tendulkar, Bangladesh could have embarrassed India even further in helpful conditions on the opening day, but that inability to close out games brought back memories of Fatullah (2006) and Multan (2003), when both Australia and Pakistan were allowed to escape from losing positions. What is clear though is that the new generation of Bangladeshi cricketers, exemplified by Shakib Al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim, isn't cowed down by the opposition's reputation. Having tasted victory over some of the big boys at the Under-19 level, they certainly aren't intimidated.
The next logical step is to take that confidence and translate it into runs. It was poor batting that cost them the opening game, with Mushfiqur's dashing century coming far too late in the piece to be of anything more than nuisance value. When you bowl a team out for 243, you need to do far better than respond with 242.
India, for their part, are unlikely to be as sloppy as they were in Chittagong, and they will certainly be boosted by the return of MS Dhoni and Harbhajan Singh. However, VVS Laxman's absence through injury - he has been ruled out - means the batting is a bit weaker. With Sreesanth having gone home with a hamstring strain, it wouldn't be surprising if Amit Mishra was retained after a decent showing in the first Test. It's been years since India won four Tests on the bounce, and success in Dhaka will set them up nicely for a two-match series against South Africa that will almost certainly decide which team is ranked No.1 in the world.

Light permitting, eight Bangladesh wickets were left with the imposing task of playing out a minimum of 90 overs to save the Chittagong Test, and only an outside chance of getting the 348 runs needed to win it. Having set Bangladesh an improbable target, thanks largely to Gautam Gambhir's fifth century in five consecutive Tests, India made important breakthroughs in the 18 overs they managed on the fourth evening.
On a pitch that had become easier to bat on in comparison to the first innings, Zaheer Khan created opportunities against the left-hand top order, but Tamim Iqbal looked more resolute than usual. The positive for India was that the amount of play lost to bad light had gradually decreased over the last two days: 84.4 overs were possible on the fourth day despite the two lost during the changeover.
Tamim showed remarkable restraint for a man reputed to be a dasher. He stayed away from adventurous shots away from his body, and twice followed verbals from Sreesanth and Ishant Sharma with sensible shots, and not quick ripostes. Imrul Kayes and Shahriar Nafees, though, couldn't find the same application. Kayes edged a ball from Zaheer that slightly held its line outside off. Nafees tried his best to get out to Zaheer, but VVS Laxman dropped him once at second slip, and the second edge fell just short of him. When Ishant squared Nafees up for the second time in the match, Virender Sehwag took a smart catch low to his right at gully.

Despite the result, Pakistan's squad became more united as the tour went on and they have received some key reinforcements, with Younis Khan and Shahid Afridi added to the unit. The South African presence in the Indian coaching bench has gained further weight after it was revealed that Eric Simons, the former South Africa coach, was appointed bowling consultant for the upcoming Test series against Bangladesh.
The duration of his appointment is not yet certain but Simons will join the Indian squad sometime next week, ahead of the first Test starting in Chittagong on January 17. "Yes, he [Simons] would be joining the squad from the Bangladesh Test series as consultant," a top BCCI official confirmed to Cricinfo.
It has been learned that Simons spoke to Gary Kirsten, India's coach, last week and that was the first occasion he learned of the management's interest in him. Simon's appointment comes after former South African fast bowler Allan Donald's name cropped up last Tuesday, as one of the contenders for the vacant bowling coach position.
"It is a great honour and I feel privileged to be asked," Simons told Cricinfo. "Gary and I go back a long way but this is all about India and I share the enthusiasm that he had when we chatted about his appointment a couple of years ago. He was absolutely enthralled and excited about the job, and that's the way I feel too."
MS Dhoni, India's captain, recently admitted that the absence of a specialist bowling coach is hurting the team's performance. It was no understatement, because the inconsistency in the fast bowling department has remained a concern right from the World Twenty20. In England, Zaheer Khan had aggravated the shoulder injury he picked during the IPL in South Africa. His inability to go full throttle exposed the younger lot like Ishant Sharma and Praveen Kumar, and though Ashish Nehra was around he was just finding his own feet, having made a return after a long time. Things did not improve during the Champions Trophy, and India's problems were exacerbated during the home ODI series against Australia, which they lost 4-2.
During the recently concluded Sri Lanka series the Indian fast bowlers were lukewarm even if they improved on their death bowling, and in the current tri-series in Bangladesh they have been disappointing. They failed to defend a total of 279 against Sri Lanka and allowed Bangladesh to post 296.
The 47-year-old Simons, who played 23 one-day internationals for South Africa and toured New Zealand in 1995, has a rich pedigree in the coaching profession and was South Africa's head coach from 2002-2004, a period when Kirsten played under him. Simons spread his first-class career, mostly with Western Province, over 17 seasons as a right-arm medium pacer and a handy lower middle order batsman.
He has never had any experience as a bowling coach except for the brief stint in the second IPL in South Africa last year, where he worked as a consultant with Royal Challengers Bangalore. Simons has worked in various capacities at the prestigious High Performance Centre in Pretoria along with the likes of Kepler Wessels.

Ponting believes his pulling will become less risky as soon as his injured elbow heals properly. Ponting has been dismissed twice to the shot during the Pakistan series and there have been calls for him to shelve it to extend his outstanding career.
However, Ponting, 35, is determined to keep playing the way that has gained him 11,561 runs at 54.79 in 141 Tests. "Wait until I get fit again and we'll see if everyone is still saying the same thing about it then," Ponting said in the Sunday Telegraph. "They are such reactive shots, they are instinctive. I'm not sure how people in the past have gone about putting them away.
"I think I have been out twice this summer pulling, but it is a shot that keeps bringing me runs so we'll see how we go with that. But as I said, if I get my elbow right then I think you'll see me playing with a lot more freedom and not only those shots, but a lot of other shots around the ground as well."
Ponting is having his worst home Test summer in more than a decade after picking up 216 runs in the five games against West Indies and Pakistan. The problems stem from his sore left elbow, which was tenderised by a Kemar Roach bouncer at the WACA last month, and there have also been suggestions that he step down from his preferred No.3.
"I read it for the first time the other day midway through the Test match, when all the negative stuff was in the papers about the team and about certain individuals and selecting of the team," Ponting said. "I haven't thought about that.
"But if the day comes where I think there is someone better in the order to bat at No. 3 than myself, then by all means I will give it some thought, but I still think I'm the best equipped to be batting at No. 3 in the Test side. Hopefully I can show everybody that over the next few weeks."

Graeme Smith has admitted the decision over Makhaya Ntini's place in South Africa's line-up is a "sensitive" issue, but unlike during the build-up to the previous Test at Durban he didn't give the struggling fast bowler his unqualified support.
Two days on from the Kingsmead Test, Smith confirmed that Ntini would retain his place in the starting line-up at the expense of Friedel de Wet, but after a performance where he went wicketless through 29 overs the captain was no longer able to offer that backing. The decision over Ntini's fate was being taken on Saturday afternoon and the news is unlikely to be good for one of South Africa's most famous sportsmen.
"It's a sensitive issue in South Africa, and that's being honest," Smith said. "Makhaya is an 'icon', through the country, not only the most iconic player of colour that we have, but also one of our most iconic cricketers in terms of performance over the last decade.

But his words come in a broader context: those totals continued a long run of sub-par performances by the batsmen in the Test arena; in 14 Test innings now, they have crossed 350 only twice.
They have struggled with their openers and their No.3 batsmen, and have been caught in a number of Test collapses through the year in Sri Lanka, New Zealand and now Australia. As in Melbourne, a number of batsmen have settled in, before getting themselves out. The failure, Yousuf believes, comes from Twenty20 cricket.

South Africa's convenor of selectors, Mike Procter, has called on the team to show their "character" after the innings-and-98-run drubbing against England at Durban. They have only two days to prepare for the next Test at Cape Town, a match they must win to retain any chance of claiming a series they were expected to dominate.
Procter admits the nature of the defeat has been hard to take, but while he maintains there is no need for panic measures he did add "at this stage, anyway". That suggests the pressure is squarely on this group of players to turn the series around otherwise places will be on the line.
"They are very down after that beating and they have got to recover and perform better in the next Test," Procter told Cricinfo. "The test of character for a side is how you come back from a defeat like that."
Procter refused to be alarmist despite 2009 bringing just a single Test victory from six matches - and that, too, in a dead rubber against Australia at Newlands - after the side achieved so much in the previous 12 months including the series victory in Australia. Securing that series, with a nine-wicket triumph at the MCG on the penultimate day of 2008, appeared to leave South Africa with the opportunity to dominate the world game.
That hasn't happened and Graeme Smith yesterday said the team "hasn't lived up to the hype." But despite the innings loss at Durban being South Africa's fourth defeat of the year Procter believes the side can turn their fortunes around. "These things happen. It was a pretty convincing victory by England and you have to give credit where it is due, they played exceptionally well," he said.
"They batted very well and bowled superbly to put pressure on our guys. I think there is still that chance [for South Africa] because there are two more games to go. We'll have a much better idea of where we stand after Cape Town. It's going to be a very interesting Test match to see how the guys respond."

Andrew Strauss took a leaf out of Dale Steyn's batting textbook, and launched England's innings with a 49-ball half-century - his fastest in Tests - as the second Test at Durban produced yet more dramatic momentum shifts on an eventful second day. By the time bad light brought another early end to proceedings, England had recovered from the indignity of watching South Africa's last pair, Steyn and Makhaya Ntini, add 58 carefree runs to their eventual total of 343, and reached the close in a promising position on 103 for 1.
Strauss, however, was that one England wicket to fall, bowled for 54 in the fifth over after tea by the one man to have troubled him consistently throughout this tour, Morne Morkel. Strauss had already enjoyed one massive slice of good fortune when the third umpire, Steve Davis, overturned an lbw appeal in Morkel's first over of the same session, despite inconclusive evidence of an inside-edge onto the pads, but second time around no replays were needed. Morkel's height, pace and off-stump accuracy combined to blast through Strauss's defences, and bring to an end the brightest of a series of cameos that lit up an otherwise piecemeal day's cricket.
Strauss has been in the form of his life in the past 12 months, and such was his dominance in the early part of his innings that his opening partner, Alastair Cook, was feeding on scraps at the other end, with 8 from 36 balls at the interval. Strauss crashed nine fours in his innings, including four in eight balls against a toiling Ntini, whose medium-paced offerings fed all three of Strauss's strengths - the pull, the cut and the drive. Steyn, bubbly after his 58-ball 47, provided some hairy moments with late swing from a tight new-ball line, and Morkel also found Strauss's edge with a lifter on off stump, but Jacques Kallis's rusty swingers were no match for a man in Strauss's mood, as he was drilled for two fours in consecutive balls.

Pakistan's teenage brigade launched a stoic counter-offensive to begin the third day, but their efforts could not entirely stave off Australia's advancement. Umar Akmal continued his brilliant form from the tour of New Zealand with an eye-catching half-century and Mohammad Aamer, the nightwatchman, stood firm through to the lunch break as Pakistan progressed to 5 for 190, still trailing Australia's first innings total by 264 runs.
Akmal proved a one-man highlight reel in the first hour of play, showing little regard for the Australian bowlers or the reverse-swinging ball. His penchant for advancing on Shane Watson, Australia's best exponent of reverse in the match to date, disrupted both bowler and wicketkeeper, and his treatment of Peter Siddle in his 17th over bordered on the disdainful.
Having been struck a nasty blow to the helmet by Siddle the previous over, Akmal opted for a change in strategy in the period prior to lunch. A fullish delivery was dispatched over mid-on with a hybrid drive-pull stroke, and when Siddle shortened in length the next ball, Akmal swatted him more conventionally to the long-on boundary. With his sights now set, he launched Siddle's ensuing offering over the long-on rope, and followed with a thick edge through a vacant third slip to the third-man boundary.
Akmal proved himself a batsman of rare class in New Zealand last month with a ton on debut followed by three half-centuries, and his first Test outing on Australian soil continued the theme. Fearless in mind and solid in technique, Akmal raised his 50 off Mitchell Johnson's next over but, with a touch of youthful impetuosity, was dismissed next ball attempting to blaze an angling delivery through the covers

Numbers can be deceiving, as Australia know all too well. They felt as though they were the better team in the Ashes this year, yet lost 2-1. West Indies will fly out of Australia with a similar reaction - they didn't win a Test and failed to regain the Frank Worrell Trophy but the contest was much tighter than the 2-0 Australian victory suggests.
Consider the following: West Indies players scored four centuries in the series to Australia's none; at the WACA they bowled Australia out for their lowest total in a home Test in almost 13 years; they had a realistic chance of winning on the final day in Adelaide and Perth; and Chris Gayle was the Player of the Series. West Indies are often unpredictable but none of those things could have been expected after they were skittled out in three days in the opening Test at the Gabba.
That result was enough to prompt derision from critics and scare Cricket Australia into thinking the summer might be a one-sided dud. The former Australian captain Kim Hughes even called for West Indies to be axed from the Test cricket family. But after a long, frank discussion following the Brisbane debacle, West Indies found resolve, and soon enough gained respect.
"I think people look at us now and think a bit differently, based on how we went about this series, even though we lost 2-0," the captain Gayle said. "I definitely know from Australia's point of view we've gained a bit more respect from them. They know it wasn't going to be a pushover, and only in the first match did they actually walk over us."
Arguably their most pleasing discovery was that their captain still has the patience for five-day cricket and has not been seduced by Twenty20. Indian team were already missing M.S.Dhoni due to ban imposed on him for two one day internationals and were dealt a blow when the dangerous Yuvraj Singh was ruled out of the rest of the series against Sri Lanka.

At Cuttack, Sri Lanka were well placed at 165/1 in 22 overs but at the end whole team was bundled out for 239 in the 44th over. This is the area where they need to tighten the grip.

India 242 for 3 (Tendulkar 96*) beat Sri Lanka 239 (Tharanga 73, Jadeja 4-32) by seven wickets. After Virender Sehwag had bludgeoned 44 from just 28 balls, an unhurried and unbeaten 96 from Sachin Tendulkar took India to a facile victory that gave them a 2-1 lead in this five-match series. Sri Lanka had dominated the early stages of the match, galloping to 165 for 1 from 22.2 overs but they then subsided in bizarre fashion, undone by a combination of Ravindra Jadeja's spin, poor shot selection and two wickets in two balls from Ishant Sharma, who had gone for 46 in his first three overs. They lost the remaining nine wickets for 74 runs and slumped to 239 all out, which India eased past with 44 balls to spare.
The game changed once Sehwag, captaining in placed of the banned MS Dhoni, brought the slow bowlers on, and it was he himself who dealt the vital blow, having Kumar Sangakkara stumped for 46 despite Dinesh Karthik initially fumbling the take. India built on that success soon after, with Upul Tharanga losing his off bail in Jadeja's opening over after an attractive 73. Sri Lanka never recovered from those twin strikes.
Mahela Jayawardene's poor series continued when he slugged a long hop from Harbhajan Singh to short midwicket, where Suresh Raina timed his leap perfectly to take the catch. Thilina Kandamby and Chamara Kapugedera stopped the rot for a few overs, but then Jadeja and Ishant combined to end all hopes of a large total.
First, Kapugedera played on off Jadeja, and then Kandamby too found the inner edge off Ishant. When Suraj Randiv got a thin edge to one that moved away, it was 210 for 7. Jadeja then trapped Nuwan Kulasekara plumb in front as Sri Lanka unravelled completely. When Jadeja slid one through the defence of Ajantha Mendis, he had 4 for 32 from his 10 overs.
It had been so different at the start of play, with Zaheer Khan bowling three wides in an opening over where Dilshan added two fours for good measure. Ishant, playing in place of Praveen Kumar, was greeted with a crisp shot to long-on and two meaty flails through cover. With Tharanga then whacking one down the ground for six, and Dilshan slapping another ball through cover, the 50 took just 3.4 overs, the fastest-ever against India.
Ashish Nehra came on to stem the tide, and Dilshan could have gone on 36 had Karthik not made a mess of a flick on to the stumps that would have run him out. It wasn't a costly miss, however, with a top-edged heave at Nehra ending up in Karthik's hands soon after. By then, though, the run-rate was 10 and, with Tharanga steering and cutting the ball neatly, the runs continued to mount.
Sangakkara drove Ishant straight down the ground to bring up the hundred, and when Tharanga edged Harbhajan down to third man, he had his half-century from 51 balls. Sangakkara then lofted Sehwag for a straight six, and things were looking exceedingly grim for India until the spinners and Ishant had their say.
Chanaka Welegedara started the Indian innings with a maiden, and Sehwag then watched Tendulkar clip and cover-drive Kulasekara for fours. When his turn came, he took Kulasekara for three fours in an over, a feat he repeated when Lasith Malinga came on without his radar in place. Welegadara was also then smashed for three fours before Dilshan held, at the third time of asking, an attempt to belt the ball over point.
After Sehwag's exit, the run-flow eased temporarily. Tendulkar was fortunate when an inside edge off Kulasekara missed leg stump on its way for four, but with some lovely strokes being played through the covers and midwicket, the innings was soon back on track.
Tendulkar greeted Mendis with a paddle and a cover-drive for four, and when he then upper-cut Kulasekara for four more, Sangakkara brought on Randiv in a bid to emulate what the Indian spinners had done earlier in the day. He duly got Gambhir, a return catch off the leading edge, but with Tendulkar well set and Yuvraj Singh finding his off-side rhythm, it looked likely to be no more than a blip.
It took Tendulkar 57 balls to reach yet another half-century, and when he then dabbed Mendis through vacant slip, the target was well below 100. Yuvraj went, playing a lazy drive at Welegedera, but with Karthik taking Mendis for two fours in an over and then chipping a Malinga yorker over mid-on, India hurtled towards the target.
Tendulkar carried on in unhurried fashion, with deft dabs and clips off the pads, and glances so fine they just evaded the keeper. But with Karthik clouting Randiv over long-on for a six, the century that the crowd was looking for never arrived. Not that it mattered. With Sri Lanka succumbing to the Christmas spirit of giving, what might have been a challenging chase for India became instead as pleasant as a moment under the mistletoe.

The rest of the Indian players were fined 40% of their match fee for the offence. Dhoni will be unavailable for the games in Cuttack and Kolkata, returning only for the final ODI in Delhi. Virendra Sehwag will captain the side in his absence.

Tamil Nadu wicket-keeper batsman Dinesh Karthik has been included in the Indian team for next two One-dayers to keep wickets in place of Dhoni. Ishant Sharma has also been recalled into the squad in place of fellow pacer S Sreesanth who is suffering from swine flu. There has been no other changes made in the squad announced by BCCI secretary N Srinivasan after a selection committee meeting in Chennai.

The numbers were mindboggling enough. Virender Sehwag and Tillakaratne Dilshan made big hundreds at a frantic lick, but the innings of the match was Kumar Sangakkara's 90 from 43 balls.

The decisive spells were bowled by Harbhajan Singh, whose three overs in the middle had gone for 32 runs, and Zaheer Khan, who finished with the most expensive analysis in India's one-day history. At the end of it all, after 100 overs in which 825 runs were scored, Sri Lanka's lion cubs couldn't quite hold their nerve. Ashish Nehra did, and India crept home by three runs.

When India piled up a team-record 414 for 7, it seemed as though this too would be a depressing no-contest. But with a full-throttle approach their only option, Sri Lanka came out with genuine intent and no little menace. India had the chance to strike early, but with Upul Tharanga on 10, Virat Kohli grassed the simplest of chances at short point, and they were made to pay as Dilshan cut loose with a flurry of boundaries. He pulled and cut anything short or wide, and drove precisely down the ground when the ball was pitched too full. Just for variety, he threw in a couple of scoops as well, each evading the fielder placed at short fine leg to stop it.

ustralia's summer of batting near misses and bouts of pain continued, but they won't be too bothered after staying well ahead of West Indies on the opening day of the final Test. While Ricky Ponting was forced to retire hurt with a throbbing left elbow and Simon Katich and Shane Watson left agonisingly close to deserved centuries, the hosts quickly forgot about their below-par performance in Adelaide and were on track for a series win after posting a formidable 3 for 339.

Ponting's elbow was the greatest concern for the hosts after he walked off on 23, but he was cleared by x-rays and will bat when required. The damage for West Indies, who could not provide lasting support for Kemar Roach, could stay a bit longer on a pitch that looked fun for batting - except when Roach was operating.

Roach woke the tourists from their morning slumber during a five-over burst from the Lillee-Marsh End in the middle session, forcing Ponting's retirement and removing Watson for 89. Strangely, he was not given the ball again until the second new ball was taken and was allowed an over into the wind before being replaced. He walked off with 1 for 67 in 13 overs, figures which don't reveal the damage he caused.

In between Roach's spells the spinners strangled Katich and Michael Clarke, giving some justification to the strange method of employing them both straight after tea. Katich was the most unfortunate, finding square leg with his sweep of Sulieman Benn to register his second 99 in Tests. He left without emotion but it was a wasted opportunity that maintained Australia's record of not owning a century in the three-match series.

At least Watson didn't briefly lose his mind, with Roach's sharp ball going away and brushing his edge on 89, but it didn't ease the pain of missing a maiden hundred, just as he did after reaching 96 in Adelaide last week. The day began with a 132-run stand between Watson and Katich, a partnership which was so comfortable it seemed like they would be unhappy if they didn't reach 600. By stumps, on a pitch missing the traditional steepling bounce, Hussey had taken them to comfort with a bright 81

Jacques Kallis's participation in this Test was in such doubt last week that South Africa packed him off to an oxygen chamber to hasten his recovery from a rib fracture. The success of his treatment was plain for all to see on the opening day at Centurion, as he produced a brilliant unbeaten 112 to asphyxiate England's ambitions in the rarefied Highveld atmosphere.

In a performance buttressed by solid contributions from Ashwell Prince, AB de Villiers and JP Duminy, South Africa reached the close of a classic Test-match day on 262 for 4, a healthy return that left Andrew Strauss ruing his decision to bowl first on a green-tinged wicket. There could be no legislating, however, for the class of Kallis, who consigned his shaky form in last year's tour of England to history to produce his 32nd century in 132 Test appearances.

His recent experiences in the IPL have transformed Kallis's mindset to such an extent that he is even unleashed as an initiative-seizing opener in limited-overs internationals. But nothing rouses him quite like the opportunity to drop anchor and bat all day, and for 203 deliveries he was the epitome of insuperable - just as he had been on England's last tour of South Africa in 2004-05, when he top-scored for the hosts with 625 runs in five matches.

In the course of his masterclass, Kallis had just two significant moments of alarm - the first from his very first delivery when Graham Onions induced a low edge through the cordon, and then again six overs before the close, when Stuart Broad, armed with the new ball, induced a streaky top-edge that flew wide of fine leg to secure his century in an improbably undignified manner.

The match has been called off as it is still raining in Napier. Rain has robbed the series of what had shaped to be an enthralling finish, so the series is drawn 1-1.
It's been a superb Test, with both teams tussling for the upper hand. New Zealand had the better of the first half of the Test, but Pakistan's batting showed plenty of spine to bring them back in the second innings, batting out a mammoth 193.2 overs. Their efforts might yet have been of no avail, as New Zealand's openers, particularly Watling, started off promisingly in their chase of 208. It was rain that had the final say, though, leaving New Zealand gutted.
The biggest gain from this series for Pakistan has to be the emergence of Umar Akmal, who rescued them several times in his debut series. The successful return of Mohammad Asif also bodes well for them. And the performances of their openers in this Test will also be a good sign ahead of the Australia Tests. Danish Kaneria also did well, getting seven on a flat track.
For New Zealand, BJ Watling made a promising debut. Tim McIntosh is likely to have saved his career with his performance in Napier, and Daniel Flynn should be a worried man when Jesse Ryder returns. There will be no Iain O'Brien to bowl tirelessly into the wind for them as he has announced his retirement. Shane Bond had a typical series: almost unplayable when fit, before injury caused him to miss matches.

Sri Lanka won the toss and decided to have a bowl on a lightly-grassed pitch in Rajkot. Gayle has added to Nathan Hauritz's worries before the Perth Test by saying the offspinner doesn't turn the ball much and is "like I'm facing up to myself". Hauritz will line up in just his third first-class game at the WACA in Wednesday's series-deciding encounter.
Gayle, the West Indies captain, wasn't concerned about the inclusion of Hauritz on a wicket that has taken more turn since it lost its pace over the past few years. "I hear the Aussies look like they are going to play Nathan Hauritz here in Perth," Gayle said in the Herald Sun. "At the moment when Hauritz is bowling to me, it's like I'm bowling to myself. He really doesn't turn the ball too much that is for sure. Occasionally he might get the odd one to spin." Hauritz knows how hard it can be in Perth and hopes to gain some drift from the afternoon sea breeze. "It can be pretty tough, it can be pretty brutal out there at times," he said in the Australian.

Indian batsman Yuvraj Singh's participation in the opening match of the ODI series against Sri Lanka is in doubt after he complained of pain in his little finger on the left hand while fielding during the second Twenty20 in Mohali on Saturday. A final decision will be taken on Monday, the eve of the match in Rajkot.
"The team management will give every possible opportunity to Yuvraj play the first ODI but the final call would be taken only tomorrow," a team source said, adding that it could take upto three weeks for him to recover, effectively ruling him out of the five-match series.
Yuvraj, who took 3 for 23 in Mohali, didn't bowl his full quota of overs and bowled only three before he was taken off after the 17th over. However, the injury didn't affect his batting as he slammed an unbeaten 60 off 25 balls, hitting five sixes, to help India comfortably chase down 207 with five balls to spare.
He was taken to a clinic in Rajkot late on Sunday evening after complaining of pain and later took an X-ray. Niranjan Shah, the president of the Saurashtra Cricket Association, told PTI that a final decision will be taken after examining the report submitted by the orthopedic surgeon.
He could be replaced by batsman Virat Kohli, who was called-up a cover for Gautam Gambhir, who was suspected to have been struck with swine flu on the eve of the Mohali game, which was later diagnosed as negative.

When, back in March 1998, Makhaya Ntini became the first black South African to represent his country, few could have predicted that he would still be going strong more than a decade later. Jacques Kallis is rated as only 50-50 to make the first Test against England at Centurion Park as he continues a slow recovery from the fractured rib that ruled him out of the one-day series. However, on a more positive note for the home side, Dale Steyn is progressing well after his hamstring strain which he picked up in the third ODI at Port Elizabeth.

Mike Procter, the convenor of selectors, is confident that Steyn will be ready to lead the attack in nine days but admitted the outlook isn't so positive for Kallis raising further questions as to how South Africa will balance their side for the opening encounter.

"Dale should be okay, but with Jacques we aren't quite sure yet. Things are progressing well, but on the conservative side I would say 50-50 is a fair call," Procter told Cricinfo. "It's a nasty injury he picked up."

When Kallis was initially ruled out of the one-dayers it was suggested that he would be considered as a specialist batsman if the injury hadn't cleared up in time for the first Test. However, Procter said that wouldn't be considered with the risks of aggravating the problem too great.

"With a cracked rib it's either right or it isn't, there isn't really anything in between like with a side strain where you may be able to get away with it by not bowling," he said. "It affects his batting as well and I think he has to be a 100% fit. We wouldn't want to jeopardise his chances by doing further damage to him with three more Tests in the series."

Kallis and Steyn will be assessed when the South Africans join up in Potchefstroom for a three-day training camp on Friday and if Kallis is ruled out a decision will need to be taken over how to cover for both his batting and bowling. In the one-dayers they went along the extra bowler route which worked at Cape Town when AB de Villiers blazed a hundred, but failed spectacularly at Port Elizabeth when they were blown away for 119 - a collapse that cost them the series.

So early in a four-match contest it seems highly unlikely that South Africa would gamble on weakening the batting even though they have included Ryan McLaren as a potential all-round option. Both he and Mark Boucher were batting one place too high in the one-day series which means Alviro Petersen is shaping up as a Test debutant. Petersen was impressive in coloured clothes as he notched three half centuries but would have huge shoes to fill.

"Jacques is a massive player and it will be great to have him there," he told the Sunday Times. "If I am required to play I'll make sure I'm as ready as possible."

While South Africa's headaches will revolve around replacing Kallis, at least it is appearing as though they won't have to concern themselves with also covering for their strike bowler. "He [Steyn] is coming along nicely," Procter said. "He and Jacques are both crucial to us, but Dale isn't looking like too much of a concern."

Steyn's recovery would mean even less chance of Friedel de Wet, the Lions quick bowler, making a debut. De Wet was the most surprising name in South Africa's 15-man squad, but with Wayne Parnell and Morne Morkel vying to support Steyn and Makhaya Ntini in the pace ranks he will have to wait a while. However, he showed impressive form in the most recent round of Supersport games with match figures of 6 for 76 against the Titans.

"In camps like this what we try and do is get guys in who haven't been around before to come so if they are called up it's not like going in totally cold," Procter said. "It's a good chance to allow Graeme Smith and Mickey [Arthur] a chance to have a look at them.

"He had a good season last year and I've seen him bowl recently on some pretty flat tracks at East London and at Johannesburg so he's a player worth looking at and we'll see what comes out of it."

Chris Martin has expressed confidence in New Zealand's struggling batting line-up ahead of the series decider in Napier, starting on Friday.
New Zealand squandered their 1-0 lead in Wellington, losing by 141 runs, as their batsmen failed to measure up to an impressive display by Pakistan's bowlers. They were bowled out for 99 in the first innings to concede a massive lead, and managed 263 in the second with their top order failing yet again.
Martin admitted his team's batsmen were under pressure to perform. "Most of the guys know this is a challenging moment in the series and their careers," he said. "These guys were under pressure coming into the series, they're still under pressure, they just need to get some runs."

New Zealand have made one change to their squad for the third Test, drafting in BJ Watling, who is likely to make his debut, in place of Peter Fulton, who's had a poor run. Barring Ross Taylor, only one other batsman in the top six has managed a half-century. But Martin acknowledged it was difficult to make sweeping changes to the line-up in the middle of a series. "It's a tough call to pull your basic core of batters out of the side when you're three-quarters of the way through a series," he said. "It's difficult at times, but the team we've got at the moment, we all can look at each other in the eye pretty genuinely.

"We all know we're giving 100%. As difficult as it is to lose, we're sticking together."
Martin praised Mohammad Asif, who has been the best of the Pakistan bowlers: in two Tests he has taken 17 wickets, marking an excellent comeback after serving a one-year ban. "At the moment there's a guy bowling quite well to them and exposing a few weaknesses here and there," Martin said. "He exposing us because we're getting caught on the crease and not getting forward.
"We've got four days to work that out and turn up with a fresh and keener state of mind to attack him a little bit differently."
The track in Napier has traditionally favoured big scores. Four of the last five Tests here have been draws. India played New Zealand in the most recent Test at the venue, and batted more than two days to save the Test after following on. Martin believed the pitch would offer New Zealand's batsmen a great opportunity to return to form. "There's always plenty of runs (in Napier). There's plenty of toil for the bowlers," Martin said.

"There's a few individuals who will want hundreds, that's what we've been missing in this series so far. Napier is the perfect opportunity for that to come true."

The scene has been set for a fascinating final two sessions after Australia lost an early wicket in their chase of 330, which if they reach it will be a record fourth-innings chase in an Adelaide Test. At lunch, West Indies need a further nine wickets for victory while Australia require another 268 runs from a minimum of 61 overs with Shane Watson at the crease on 20 and Ricky Ponting on 19.
Dwayne Bravo made the breakthrough when Simon Katich drove on the up to cover and was well caught by Adrian Barath for 21. Kemar Roach was also looking impressive and was regularly breaking the 150kph barrier on a pitch that was still playing reasonably well, but Ponting wasn't afraid to go after Roach and shortly before lunch scooped him for six over square leg.
West Indies were relying heavily on their spinner Sulieman Benn, who came on for the sixth over having picked up five wickets in the first innings, and immediately found bounce and sharp spin. Watson survived a couple of close lbw calls against straight balls from Benn and was probably saved by a long lunge forward, although on at least one occasion the TV umpire would have had grounds to rule him out had Chris Gayle asked for a review.
Gayle had earlier batted on for half an hour so West Indies could add 33 to their overnight total before they were dismissed for 317, setting Australia at least 81 overs to reach their target. It would be the fifth-highest successful Test run chase in Australia if they could get there, but should they be bowled out the series will be levelled at 1-1 with one match to play in Perth.
West Indies began the day with a lead of 296 runs and two wickets in hand and they batted for another 6.5 overs, with Gayle finishing unbeaten on 165. He was the first West Indies captain to carry his bat in a Test innings, having added ten to his overnight score with the Australians spreading eight fielders to the boundary when he was on strike.

On a day of good old-fashioned Test cricket, a persistent Sulieman Benn and a powerful Kemar Roach dragged West Indies into an unexpectedly strong position with two days to play. Half-centuries from Michael Clarke and Brad Haddin guided Australia to within 12 of West Indies' first-innings 451 but having resumed at 0 for 174, Australia had anticipated batting out the day and building a lead from which they could push for victory.
Instead it was West Indies who finished with an advantage. They had reached 0 for 23 with Chris Gayle on 12 and Adrian Barath on 10, and although the odds of a draw have shortened, the visitors will undoubtedly have victory on their minds when they begin their charge 35 runs in front on the fourth morning. They could be helped by the potential absence of Peter Siddle, who has stiffness in his hamstring.
Progress wasn't easy for either side. The towering Benn was forced to send down 53 overs for his 5 for 155 and Roach worked hard, regularly in the 150kph region for his three wickets. Clarke reached 71 but had trouble against Roach, Michael Hussey compiled a painfully unconvincing 41 and the top-order players struggled early against Benn's turn and bounce. Haddin looked as good as any of Australia's batsmen in a confident 55 before he ran out of partners.
The star of the day was Benn, who had endured some long spells in Test cricket, including 47 overs in an innings against Australia in Bridgetown last year, but had never bowled this many. He toiled unchanged for the first three hours and was rewarded with the first five-wicket Test haul from a West Indies spinner since Gayle four and a half years ago. And he was the first specialist to achieve it since Dinanath Ramnarine nearly nine years ago.
By the time he grabbed his final wicket, Siddle caught edging to gully, Benn was understandably tired but still smiling. He had his moments of good fortune - Marcus North was caught at leg slip when he tried to sweep and the ball ran off the back of his bat - but it was Benn's drift and spin and lift that created the opportunities.
Having removed both openers with little addition to the overnight total, Benn also picked up the major wicket of Clarke with a delivery that dragged him wide outside off and his drive was snapped up at slip. Clarke had his sights set on a fourth century in five Test innings at Adelaide Oval and although he played some luscious strokes, including a cover-driven boundary off Dwayne Bravo, he was never overly comfortable against Roach.
The youngest of the West Indies fast men, Roach, 21, was still hitting the mid-140s in his final over of the day and none of Australia's batsmen played him with ease. Hussey in particular looked vulnerable and was so cumbersome that he didn't score his first four until his 115th delivery. The pressure almost led to Hussey being run-out attempting a suicidal single when he was on 24, but he was fortunate that Brendan Nash's throw from mid-off missed the stumps.
Hussey's second boundary came with a lucky top edge when he tried to withdraw from a pull against Roach. Next ball he was put out of his misery when he was late on a cut and the ball flicked the toe of his bat on the way through to Denesh Ramdin. The wicket was well deserved for Roach, who finished with 3 for 93 and shouldered much of the fast-bowling load.
He had earlier accounted for Ricky Ponting, who looked positive in reaching 36 but fell when he directed his pull straight to Bravo at midwicket. Ponting had opened his account with a punishing boundary cut square of the wicket off Benn, which added to the hurt for Shane Watson, who had just departed needing a similar four for his maiden Test century.
Watson might have had a restless night having gone to bed on 96 but was given plenty of time to catch up on his sleep during the afternoon after he went for a pull from the second delivery of the day, only to lose his middle stump. It was a long, sad walk back to the dressing room for Watson. He is not the sort of man to disguise his emotions and he hung his head in disappointment.
Benn followed soon after by turning one enough to just clip the face of the bat of Simon Katich (80) as he attempted a drive, and the ball lobbed off his leg to Barath at bat-pad. The Australians hoped that would be as close as Barath came to a bat for the rest of the day. Instead, it is now up to him and Gayle to lead West Indies' push for victory.
